Description
EMAA (ethylene methacrylic acid copolymer resin) is a thermoplastic copolymer of ethylene and methacrylic acid, produced by high-pressure free-radical copolymerization. The methacrylic acid groups give the resin polarity, providing excellent adhesion to metal, glass and paper surfaces without primers. Compared with EAA (acrylic acid), the bulkier methacrylic acid side groups give EMAA resin higher stiffness and better clarity.
When neutralised with metal ions (Na⁺, Zn²⁺, Li⁺), EMAA resin forms ionomers (Surlyn®) — polymers combining outstanding toughness, clarity, oil resistance and shape recovery after deformation. Used in premium packaging, sporting goods and safety glazing.
Applications
EMAA is used in golf balls, packaging films, safety glass interlayers, perfume caps and specialty coatings.

SURLYN™ — Dow ionomer resins based on ethylene copolymers with (meth)acrylic acid, neutralised with metal ions (Na⁺, Zn²⁺). Produced by unique ionic cross-linking technology. Combining high clarity, low-temperature impact resistance, stiffness and elastic memory. Used in golf ball covers, transparent packaging films, cosmetic containers and protective coatings.
