Description
EVOH resin (ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer) is a high-barrier polymer used as the gas barrier layer in food and pharmaceutical packaging, films, fuel tanks and pipes. SUPULIDE supplies EVOH from China; TDS and prices are provided on request by email.
EVOH (ethylene vinyl alcohol) resin is a thermoplastic barrier copolymer produced by saponification (hydrolysis) of ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) copolymer. The hydroxyl groups of the polyvinyl alcohol segments give EVOH outstandingly low gas permeability to oxygen, carbon dioxide, aromas and other gases — among the best oxygen-barrier properties of any commercial thermoplastic material. The ethylene content sets the balance between barrier performance and processability: higher ethylene content improves moisture resistance and melt flow, while lower ethylene content improves oxygen barrier.
EVOH is compatible with most thermoplastics and processes easily by coextrusion, co-injection and coextrusion blow molding. As a barrier layer it is combined with polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polyamide (PA) and other polymers in multilayer structures; tie-layer adhesives (e.g. ADMER, Plexar) are required to bond EVOH to non-polar polymers.
What defines EVOH properties
The ethylene content of the copolymer sets the balance between barrier performance and processability: higher ethylene content improves moisture resistance and melt flow, while lower ethylene content gives a stronger oxygen barrier. EVOH in multilayer structures with PP, PE and PA
EVOH is used as a barrier layer in coextruded and co-injected structures together with polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP) and polyamide (PA). Because EVOH is polar, a tie-layer adhesive (e.g. ADMER, Plexar) is required to bond it to non-polar polymers.
