EVOH (Ethylene-Vinyl Alcohol) is the best commercially available gas barrier resin, providing excellent oxygen, aroma and solvent barrier in multi-layer flexible and rigid packaging.
Description
EVOH (ethylene vinyl alcohol) resin is a thermoplastic barrier copolymer produced by saponification (hydrolysis) of ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) copolymer. The hydroxyl groups of the polyvinyl alcohol segments give EVOH outstandingly low gas permeability to oxygen, carbon dioxide, aromas and other gases — among the best oxygen-barrier properties of any commercial thermoplastic material. The ethylene content sets the balance between barrier performance and processability: higher ethylene content improves moisture resistance and melt flow, while lower ethylene content improves oxygen barrier.
EVOH is compatible with most thermoplastics and processes easily by coextrusion, co-injection and coextrusion blow molding. As a barrier layer it is combined with polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polyamide (PA) and other polymers in multilayer structures; tie-layer adhesives (e.g. ADMER, Plexar) are required to bond EVOH to non-polar polymers.
Applications
EVOH is used in food packaging (MAP), pharmaceutical blisters, fuel tanks, agricultural films and pipes for underfloor heating.
