OBC combines a high-crystallinity hard block (high melting point) and a low-crystallinity soft block (low glass-transition temperature) in one molecule. This unique structure provides excellent elasticity, high heat resistance and efficient compression set compared to conventional POE.

What are olefin block copolymers (OBC)? Olefin block copolymers are ethylene-octene copolymers with a block architecture: crystallizable hard blocks (low comonomer content, high melting point) alternate with amorphous soft blocks (high comonomer content, low glass-transition temperature) within a single polymer chain. This linear block structure — as opposed to the random distribution found in conventional metallocene elastomers — is made possible by Chain Shuttling Catalysis, a dual-catalyst process in which a chain-shuttling agent transfers the growing polymer chain back and forth between two catalysts. The technology was developed and commercialized by Dow under the INFUSE™ brand. Because of this block structure, OBCs offer better heat resistance and elasticity than conventional POE elastomers of similar density.

OBC is used in footwear (especially sport soles), automotive sealing, consumer goods, cables and industrial components.
